Media Literacy has a wide variety of definitions but can be summarized as the ability to analyze and understand all different forms of media. Having media literacy skills is crucial in our society, especially with the overabundance of information we come into contact with everyday. It gives us the power to sift through the data we encounter and determine the hidden agendas behind the information, and whether it's coming from reliable or unreliable sources.
Fake news is circulating at an all-time high, and we need to be equipped with the knowledge to spot it. According to a Statista article published earlier this year, only 26% of the participants were confident in their ability to detect fake news in the media. 67% of the surveyed Americans believed that fake news caused them a great deal of confusion.
When creating media, media literacy is essential. Creating media can be defined as creating a social media post, communicating with others online, writing a blog or book, making music, creating artwork, or even speaking with others. It is a critical component of media literacy because it can help media creators to better question and analyze their own content before releasing it into the world.
The rise of media literate media creators would help decrease the amount of fake news spread throughout our society. It would give everyone the power to think freely for themselves, without being persuaded into a certain ideology while creating or viewing content. We as a society would become smarter, more responsible, and further focused on the important topics being discussed in the world, instead of being stuck in a cycle of misinformation and confusion.
